Discover the power of Chios mastic
100% natural
100% effective
What is Chios mastic?

Chios mastic (Greek: Μαστίχα Χίου) is a natural aromatic resin secreted exclusively by the Pistacia lentiscus var. Chios tree, which grows only in the southern part of the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea, Greece.

When hardened, mastic appears as light yellow droplets, commonly referred to as “tears of mastic”. It offers a mildly spicy, resinous and slightly aromatic taste.

Chemically, mastic is incredibly rich:

It contains more than 80 bioactive compounds.

Key components include monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-myrcene, limonene), sesquiterpenes, polyphenols and phytosterols.

It has strong antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and healing properties.

There is a lot of research and clinical studies that confirm the health benefits of mastic. Among the most well-known and recognized among experts are the studies dealing with the anti-inflammatory activity of mastic and its relationship to antioxidant effects, Triantafyllou et al., Nutrition Journal, 2011, "Mastic Gum Kills Helicobacter pylori", the early work showing that mastic has activity against H. pylori in vitro/in vivo; often cited as pioneering, Huwez et al., NEJM, 1998, or the comprehensive in vitro and in vivo work mapping the antimicrobial and gastroprotective effects of mastic extracts, Paraschos et al., 2006 (Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy / PMC).

Origin and history

Antiquity
The first mentions of mastic date back to the 5th century BC – Hippocrates recommended it for the treatment of digestive and inflammatory disorders.

Mastic was valued in ancient Greece and Rome for its medicinal purposes, the production of perfumes and exclusive chewing gums.

Middle Ages
During the Byzantine Empire, mastic became a luxury medicinal and cosmetic product.

During the Ottoman rule, mastic was so valuable that theft was punishable by death.

The villages of “Mastichochoria” in southern Chios received special privileges in exchange for the production of mastic.

Modern times
In 1997, Chian mastic was granted PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status by the European Union.

Modern scientific research has confirmed the many traditional health benefits of mastic, especially for the gastrointestinal system, the immune system and oral health.

Balancing the intestinal microbiota: promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria while reducing harmful pathogens.

Anti-inflammatory effects
Reduction of inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract: helps with chronic inflammatory conditions such as colitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in animals.

Prevention of secondary infections: mastic eliminates excessive immune responses.

Antimicrobial and antifungal effects
